About Editorial
We re looking for people who have the passion, creativity and chops to engage their local community through incisive reporting, professional editing and thoughtful content curation. We need people who can also leverage an array of new technology, tools and social media.
As a Assistant Editor, you ll become part of a dynamic and innovative team of journalists, engineers, designers and business professionals, creating bold new solutions for our industry. You will have the chance to work with Local and Regional Editors to create great content around all things local in your community -- effectively informing and delighting our Patch users. This is far more than an opportunity to transform journalism; it s an opportunity to improve the lives of your community members.
Your Role
Report, utilizing multimedia skills, and create original content for the site
Help Local Editors build a community online and get people addicted to your site
Encourage user-generated content and community involvement, including recruiting a variety of contributors
Interact, engage, reach out, and otherwise be peripatetic and ubiquitous in your community
Be invested in the success of your community -- write for the community, not about the community
Your Qualifications:
Entrepreneurial spirit and drive
Experience in online community building -- using tools and strategies for seeding conversations and engaging with your users
Comfort with being a leader/local celebrity in the community, not merely an observer but a participant
Demonstrated ability to manage your time, as well as plan and prioritize your work
Flexibility and a willingness to change directions
Passion for writing for the web, social networking and community journalism
Understanding of the value and impact of carefully curated and aggregated content
Ability to report on a tight deadline -- degree in journalism a plus, but not required
Great news judgement and the ability to tap into the interests, rhythms and identity of a town
A willingness to ask tough questions of important people
Understanding of copyright and libel laws
Car ownership (a must) and flexibility to work from anywhere -- be it at home, from your car, at a coffee shop or the high school football game
Willingness/ability to live in or damn close to the relevant market location
